The same drying tower with a different heat source can differ greatly in annual operating cost. Heat-source selection cannot look only at "low unit price" but at the fuel's availability locally, full-lifecycle cost and regulatory environment.
1. Four Mainstream Heat Sources
- Diesel: Stable calorific value, on-demand start, no dependence on a pipeline network; but high unit heat cost, exposed to oil-price volatility.
- Natural gas: Clean, unit heat cost usually lower than diesel (where a pipeline exists); but depends on pipeline coverage, unavailable in remote areas.
- Coal: Lowest unit heat cost; but emissions and dust regulation are tightening, restricted in many areas, and requires coal storage and dust removal.
- Biomass pellets: Renewable, moderate cost; requires material storage and automatic feeding system, suited to areas with surrounding agricultural/forestry residues.

3. Selection Logic
- First look at fuel availability: Remote producing areas with no pipeline and no pellet resources — diesel is the most stable.
- Then look at full-lifecycle cost: Where a natural-gas pipeline exists, gas is cheaper long-term; where surrounding agricultural/forestry residues exist, biomass pellets can cut cost.
- Regulatory environment: Coal is gradually exiting under environmental pressure; new projects should be cautious.
- Multi-source compatibility: Many owners choose "primary heat source + backup" to cope with fuel fluctuations.
