Buyers often treat model numbers as a price lookup. In reality, a model code encodes the capacity tier and the drying method — the two things that decide whether a machine fits your operation. Understanding the matrix lets you skip irrelevant quotes and ask suppliers the right questions.
The Three Series at a Glance
AmGrainTech's drying line is organized into three families that map cleanly to capacity tiers:
- 5HYZF series — small batch dryers, roughly 3–25 TPD. Built for farms, cooperatives and multi-crop flexibility.
- 5HX series — continuous / mixed-flow dryers, from around 22 TPD upward (commonly 22–300+ TPD). The mid-scale workhorse.
- 5HL series — tower (column) dryers, 100–1000 TPD. High-throughput, low-labor commercial lines.
5HYZF: Small Batch, Maximum Flexibility
The 5HYZF family (e.g., 5HYZF-03 through 5HYZF-25) covers low daily volumes where you may switch crops between batches. Batch drying means a clean start-stop per load — useful for seed or premium rice where each batch is monitored. Footprint is small and siting is easy, often inside an existing structure. The trade-off is higher labor per ton versus continuous lines at scale.
5HX: The Continuous Mid-Tier
The 5HX series (e.g., 5HX-22, 5HX-32) bridges batch and tower. It runs as a continuous or near-continuous mixed-flow line, delivering steady throughput with moderate site requirements. This is the typical choice when volume has outgrown batch but a full tower is not yet justified. It pairs well with automated loading and a single stable heat source.
5HL: Tower Scale for Commercial Throughput
The 5HL tower series (e.g., 5HL-100 through 5HL-1000) is engineered for storage centers and large processors moving 100–1000 TPD around the clock. It needs a prepared foundation, conveyors and usually a control setup, but its cost per ton is the lowest at scale. Heat-source options (coal, biomass pellet, oil/gas) are configurable per model.
Reading a Model Number
The digits after the prefix are the capacity indicator, not the price. A "5HL-300" is a 300-scale tower; a "5HYZF-15" is a 15-scale batch unit. When a supplier quotes by model alone, ask for the capacity (TPD), drying method, heat source and moisture-reduction range — those define value, not the code.
Matching Series to Crop and Volume
Rice and seed (quality-sensitive) often sit in 5HYZF (batch, gentle) or a low-temperature 5HX/5HL with tempering. Maize (high-temperature tolerant) scales naturally into 5HX and 5HL towers. Multi-crop small operators start at 5HYZF. Our buying guide expands the full decision tree.
Questions to Ask Before Quoting
Request: rated TPD at your moisture drop, drying method, heat-source options, foundation/civil requirements, and whether the model supports your secondary crops. A supplier who answers all five is specifying to fit; one who quotes a number alone is not.
